Longtime Washington Horseman Harry James MacRoberts Passes Away

FINLEY, WA—NOVEMBER 15, 2021—Harry James MacRoberts, 74, of Finley, Washington, while surrounded by loving family, passed away at his home on Monday, November 8, 2021, from complications of bone cancer. The family expresses deep, heartfelt gratitude to Chaplaincy Hospice Care for fulfilling Harry’s desire to begin his new journey on his own terms.

Born in Whitman, Massachusetts, to parents Vernon Earl MacRoberts (an M.I.T. Science Technician), and mother, Ruth Harriet Fischer, along with three older siblings, sisters Ruth Ann Ghelfi and Janet Louise Drew; and a brother, Donald Earl MacRoberts.

He married Gayle Robbins also of Whitman, Massachusetts, and in 1974, their first son, Adam, was born. The three would soon settle in Finley, Washington, where Harry began his scrap and special metals company, “Super Scrap,” which he owned and operated until his death and where they had another son, Matt, and a daughter, Brianne.

Divorced, Harry married his best friend, Ginny Harding, an equine artist, in 1996 and became a father figure to her two sons, Jeremiah and Trapper. Together, Harry and Ginny raised and bred running Quarter Horses for two and a half decades on their Toll Tax Farms in Finley.

Horse racing was just one of Harry’s passions; baseball owned a part of his heart from his childhood into his adult life. He coached youth teams for Finley area little league and pony league for many years. His music brought joy to his family his entire life; without a single lesson, Harry picked up his first guitar as a young teen and self-taught his way to becoming an excellent musician and endearing songwriter.

This passion remained his No. 1 pastime until his death. The time spent teaching his youngest granddaughter Laney to sing and play was probably the most satisfying and endearing thing he’d done in his lifetime.

Harry is survived by wife, Ginny, his two sisters, Ann and Janet, son Adam MacRoberts (of MacRoberts Construction) and wife Ernetta; son Matt MacRoberts (of MacRoberts Handyman) and wife Crystal; daughter Brianne Hoopes and husband Curtis; step-sons Jeremiah Harding and beloved Courtney, and Trapper Harding and wife Michelle; grandchildren in order of age – Ashtin MacRoberts, Brandon Harding, Danielle Harding, Destiny MacRoberts, Alex and Ethan MacRoberts, Madison Hoopes, Trevor Hoopes, Blake Harding, Kayley Harding, Evan Harding, Lilly MacRoberts and Delaney MacRoberts; and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by countless wonderful friends, too numerous to list, but he loved each one.

Cremation and obituary by Life Tributes Cremation Center. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. on November 27 at the Finley Baptist Church on Game Farm Rd in Finley, Washington, with a reception following at The Finley Grange. The family asks that donations be made in Harry’s name to Chaplaincy Healthcare (Hospice) in lieu of flowers.
