LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 29, 2021—Jockey Jose Cedillo enjoyed his first professional Quarter Horse victory after piloting Jose Beltran and Francisco Diaz’s Cartel Love to his second allowance win of the season in the ninth race on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
The 22-year-old pilot was picking up his first win in only his 11th mount. He had previously ridden a runner-up and a pair of third place finishers.
"It’s a big thrill and I’m extremely happy because this is my first win," Cedillo said. "It’s even more special because it happened at Los Alamitos, which is such a nice place. The trip went great with the horse. He broke sharply, went towards the inside but then he found his groove and finished strongly. He fired nicely at the start and continued sharply."
Cedillo gained experience being around Quarter Horses in Mexico during his teenage years. He spent some time in Texas also working with horses before making his way to California.
Cedillo made his riding debut at Los Alamitos for trainer Matt Fales aboard Delila Rose in a maiden race on May 29. His first win came with the Jesus Nunez-trained gelding by Favorite Cartel, who covered the 350-yards in 3/4 lengths.
"This is my first year at Los Alamitos and I’ve enjoyed it," Cedillo added. "I’m thankful to have had the support of a lot of great owners and trainers here.
