Celebration of Life Set Thursday For Longtime Texas Horseman Simon Escamilla

ROMA, TX—OCTOBER 26, 2021—A "Celebration of Live" for Simon Escamilla will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28th at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rio Grande City, Texas.

Viewing will begin Wednesday (Oct. 27) and a Rosary is set for 6 pm at the Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City.

Escamilla, 81, a longtime Texas horse owner and breeder died Monday (Oct. 25), in Roma surrounded by his family.

Simon was born on October 15, 1940, in Beeville, Texas, and was the son of Daniel and Lorenza Escamilla. He was happily married to Norma Villarreal and was a great husband, father, and friend.

His passion was training and racing Quarter Horses for a living and enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to travel, spend time with family, and help others in need. Simon was a great role model and mentor to his children. He was known by others for his famous horses and great personality.

On Saturday (Oct. 23), Simon's 3-year-old homebred Ima Famous Eagle won the third race at Lone Star Park by two lengths. The gelding is out of his mare Iam First Royal, who produced Simon's top runner Jess Iam First Royal which set a track record, that still stands, at Gillespie County Fairgrounds in 2016.

Simon is survived by his wife, Norma Escamilla; four children, Maria Garza, Ricardo Escamilla, Roberto Escamilla, and Lora Escamilla.
