Zoomin For Spuds Looks To Make History In Z. Wayne Directors Trials

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—NOVEMBER 12, 2021—Walker Family Trust’s Zoomin For Spuds will look to qualify to the Champion of Champions for record sixth time when he leads a great cast of 19 horses in the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

There will be two divisions of the Directors Trials with the horses with the two fastest times earning presumptive berths to the December 11, $600,000 Champion of Champions. If any other berths open to the 440-yard classic, the horses with the third fastest time could also earn a presumptive berth. As it stands right now, this great group of runners will be vying for just one of the two spots currently available.

For Zoomin For Spuds, who won the Champion of Champions in 2016, this is a chance to make history. The now 8-year-old runner is currently tied with the legendary Refrigerator and the 2008 Champion of Champions winner Jess You And I as the only five-time qualifiers to the sport’s most prestigious race for older horses.

Zoomin For Spuds will be in action in the second of two Directors Trials while going after his 18th career win in 41 starts. The son of Zoomin For Bux qualified to the 2020 Champion of Champions thanks to a win in the Directors Trials. In the second heat, he’ll face Apollitical Pence, who’ll be looking to return to the Champion of Champions after posting a surprising victory at 12-1 odds last year. Owned by Dunn Ranch LLC., Apollitical Pence qualified to the after running second to Zoomin For Spuds in this race last year.

This heat will also feature Grade 1 winner Chocolatito for Ed Allred and Restricted Grade 1 winner Bail Czech for EG High Desert Farms. Other World, who ran second in the Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship is one of two sophomores in this race. Howard Nichols’ Doc Lamb is the other one.

The first division will be led by Allred’s Nomadic and Circle City, the full brothers with graded stakes winning pedigree. Circle City already has a berth in the Champion of Champions so he’s using this race as a tightener, while Nomadic is looking for a spot in the ultra-important race. Stakes winners Constituent, Mental Error, Candy Blood and John Carter Cash are among the other top starts in this division.
