GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—NOVEMBER 2, 2021—-Eighteen 400-yard Texas Classic Futurity (G1) trials — nine on Saturday and nine on Sunday — are on tap for Lone Star Park this weekend.
The five fastest qualifiers from each night will meet in the November 27, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity final.
Saturday’s trials are led by graded stakes winners KJ Desparado and San Lorenzo Tay. A gelded son of world champion Apollitical Jess, KJ Desparado is coming off of a Ruidoso Downs summer campaign during which he qualified to all three open Grade 1 futurities and scored a neck victory in Quarter Horse racing’s richest and most prestigious race, the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1) on September 6.
Wes Giles trains KJ Desparado for owners John Lee, Kathy Lee, and Ruben Mares. The gelding drew post 9 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos in Saturday’s fourth trial.
San Lorenzo Tay drew post 6 and will be ridden by Juan Pulido in Saturday’s sixth heat. A gelded son of Ivory James trained by Santos Carrizales Jr. for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr., San Lorenzo Tay was a $67,000 purchase at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The gelding has won all three of his starts and has earned $392,482, and he will be making his first official start since April 17, when he scored a half-length victory in the 330-yard, $926,000 Remington Park Futurty (RG1) for Oklahoma-breds.
Graded stakes winners Jet Black Grace is among the 2-year-olds entered in Sunday’s trials. A $55,000 purchase at last year’s Texas QHA Yearling Sale, Jet Black Grace has won all four of his starts, including the 350-yard, $1.315-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park on May 29, and he has banked $576,116.
Jet Black Grace is a gelded son of Jet Black Patriot trained by Santos Carrizales Jr. for owner Zitro Racing Corp. He drew post 9 and will by Juan Pulido in Sunday’s fourth heat.
