LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 22, 2021—After an impressive allowance victory four weeks ago, Veronica Hernandez’s Jess Anothercommando looks to take another step forward when she heads eight 2-year-old fillies in the $20,000 Aqualina Handicap at 300 yards on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, the Mr Jess Perry filly was among the longest shots on the board at 8-1 in her September 25 win, but she dominated the race, crossing the wire a half-length ahead of Benevolent with invaders Touranine and the highly regarded Trapper Jon finishing behind them.
Jess Anothercommando has previous stakes experience. She was second in the Arizona Downs Stakes on June 29. She’s finished in the top two in four of her six starts.
The Aqualina is named after the Muriel Hyland-bred 1978 Golden State Derby winner, who earned winner’s circle visits in six of her 10 career starts. In 1977, the Alamitos Bar filly was second in the Las Ninas and fourth in the Kindergarten Futurity.
Simulcasting of the AQHA Bank of America Racing Challenge starting at 3 p.m. also heads the Saturday simulcast action. Handicapping info by Ed Burgart and PPs are available inside this edition of Night Lines.
