HOBBS, NM—NOVEMBER 1, 2021—Graded stakes winner Icy Morning Breeze returned to the winner's circle today when she defeated Winner Takes All in the $30,000 New Mexico Classic Quarter Horse Sophomore on the second day of of the two-days of New Mexico Cup races.
Fifteen state-bred stakes — eight for Thoroughbreds and seven for Quarter Horses — were contested on Sunday and Monday, New Mexico Cup Day(s) at Zia Park in Hobbs.
In a strong rally under jockey Juan Rivas, Icy Morning Breeze easily rolled to a 1-¼ length win. She stopped the clock in :19.673 seconds for the 400 yards, equaling a 94 speed index. It was the sixth career win in 11 starts for the daughter of multiple stakes sire Winners Version. Jackie Riddle conditions the bay filly.
Racing for owner-breeders William and Mary Robertson, Icy Morning Breeze is out of the thoroughbred mare Icy Storm, by Attila's Storm. Winner of the Mountain New Mexico Bred QH Futurity at Ruidoso last summer, Icy Morning Breeze earned $18,000 to bring her total earnings mark to $258,995.
Also by Winners Version, runner-up Winner Takes All earned $6,000 for second-place. Eric Valenzuela saddled the brown colt out of A Scootin Princess, by Heza Motor Scooter, for owner David Vasquez. J. and H/A and D. Erickson is the breeder.
Finishing three-quarters back, there was a three-way dead-heat for third between Ember Moon (First Moonflash), Fantastico Dragon (Zulu Dragon) and Tuco Salamanca (Tf Feature Effort). Each of the horses earned $1,800 for the effort.
Mr Money Baggs completed the field. Im Jess Sixy was scratched.
