CYPRESS, CA—OCTOBER 2, 2021—Oscar Parra and Cesar Nunez purchased Hip 120 Valley Of Fires, a colt by Favorite Cartel out of the stakes winning mare Attack The Cartel, for $105,000 to make the full brother to Evangeline Downs Futurity winner Rumor Goin Around the high seller on the first of two sessions of the 17th annual Los Alamitos Equine Sale on Saturday.

Fifteen yearlings were purchased for $50,000 or higher with the sale average of $25,787 on 106 yearlings sold representing a 19.54% increase compared to the opening session last year. Day one resulted in sales of $2,733,400.

"The sale is off to a strong start, and we are looking forward to a great second session," said Dino Perez, the business manager of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association, which manages the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. "We had a great turnout, a beautiful Southern California day and an excellent first day of Quarter Horses to kick off the sale."

Consigned by Burns Ranch, the 2019 AQHA Breeder of the Year, Valley Of Fires is also a full brother to Four Forty Blast Handicap winner and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity finalist On Our Way and Golden State Juvenile finalist Attack The Wind. His second dam is Separate Tac, who is the dam of Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Pitbull and the stakes placed Tac Out. Nunez campaigned Pitbull, who earned $178,770 in his racing career.

Barry Woodhouse purchased Hip 8 Jim Hardie, a colt by top stallion Favorite Cartel out of Ruths Chris, for $90,000 to make the full brother to Black Fryday the second high seller. Also consigned by Burns Ranch, Jim Hardie is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Stripsteak. Black Fryday, meanwhile, has earned over $368,000 in a career that has included wins in the Governor’s Cup Derby and (G2) Southern California Derby while also racing in the (G1) Los Alamitos Super Derby.

David Hinkins signed the ticket for Hip 121 Price Fixer for $85,000 to make the Favorite Cartel colt the third highest seller. Bred by Ed Allred, Price Fixer is out of the broodmare Chickafirst from the family of PCQHRA champion broodmare Chickasis. This is the family of stakes winners Hot Hitter, Hard Hitting, Streak Hitter, Lassen County and more.

Dutch Masters III purchased the One Famous Eagle filly One Famous Boogie, Hip 108, for $75,000 to make the half-sister to the Grade 1 stakes placed filly J Best Boogie the fourth highest seller. Allred bough Hip 94 In Doubt for $70,000 to complete the top five. In Doubt is a Favorite Cartel filly out of Babe On Fire, who is a full-sister to promising young stallion Fly Thru The Fire. This is the family of Grade 1 stakes winner Rock You and Little Talks.
