OPELOUSAS, LA—NOVEMBER 30, 2021—A total of 46 3-year-olds, headed by Grade 3 winner Famous Chief, are entered in Saturday’s 400-yard Evangeline Downs Derby at Evangeline Downs.
A gelded son of One Famous Eagle trained by Eric Long for owner Ramon Calvillo Jr., Famous Chief is coming off of a three-quarter length victory on a sloppy and sealed track in the October 2, 440-yard Dash For Cash Derby (G3) at Lone Star Park. Famous Chief has won three of five races and has earned $120,086 this season, and he was claimed by his current owner for $30,000 at Remington Park on April 29.
Famous Chief drew post 4 and will be ridden by Bryan Candanosa in the fifth of six trials.
Trainer Toby Keeton will send out Senator Volcum for owner Wootan Racing. A homebred son of Volcom, the gelding will be stretching out in distance off of his second-place finish, a head behind winner My Midnight Candy, in the November 13, 350-yard Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby (R) for state-bred sophomores at Will Rogers Downs.
Senator Volcum drew post 5 and will be ridden by Luis Vivanco in the third heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the December 30, $50,000-added Evangeline Downs Derby final.
