GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—NOVEMBER 24, 2021—KJ Desparado, a gelded son of world champion Apollitical Jess, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 400-yard, $1,114,816 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.
KJ Desparado is trained by Wes Giles for owners John Lee, Kathy Lee, and Ruben Mares.
The third-fastest overall qualifier, the Arizona-bred gelding was a finalist in all three open Grade 1 futurities during the Ruidoso Downs summer meet, and he ended his season on the mountain with a neck victory in the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1).
KJ Desparado has won five of nine starts -- including two of three at the 400-yard distance -- and he has earned $1,608,868. The gelding drew post 10 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos.
Fastest overall qualifier Mr Apollo Jess drew post 3 and will be ridden by Juan Pulido for owner Zitro Racing Corp. and trainer Santos Carrizales Jr. An earner of $134,729 from seven outs, the Apollitical Jess colt made his local debut with a clear 2 1/4-length win in the first of nine trials on November 6, the first of two nights of trials.
Other contenders include Jet Black Grace, an undefeated Jet Black Patriot gelding trained by Santos Carrizales Jr. for owner Zitro Racing Corp. Jet Black Grace has banked $582,116 from five starts, and his five wins include a neck victory in the May 29, $1.315-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park.
Jet Black Grace drew the rail post and will be ridden by James Flores.
