ALBUQUERQUE, NM—OCTOBER 23, 2021—The Downs at Albuquerque hosted five undercard stakes on Saturday's 10-race Bank of America Challenge Championship Night.
$40,000 Lobo Derby
The $40,000 Lobo Derby ended in a dead-heat between Echo Of Thunder and Wieburg. The pair completed the 400 yards in :19.898 seconds, equaling an 86 speed index with a 4 mph tailwind. Each of the 3-year-olds earned $13,200 for the effort.
Trainer Alejandro Chavez saddled Echo Of Thunder, a son of multiple stakes winner Turbulent Times, for owner Miguel Mendoza. Birrell Farms bred the brown gelding in Utah from the Maknmoves mare Bf Memory Lane. Jockey Edgar Martinez rode the multiple stakes winner of $74,507.
Wieburg, an Oklahoma-bred son of Ivory James, races for owner-breeder and trainer Patrick Swan. Daniel Torres rode the bay gelding out of Hollie Jollie by Fredricksburg. He has earned $72,828.
Charlenas Relentless picked up $4,000 for third.
$40,000 Pitre GMC Distaff Stakes
Jessapolliticalgirl was a half-length winner over A Valiant Diamond in the $40,000 Pitre GMC Distaff Stakes for 3-year-old & up fillies and mares. Jose DeHerrera trains the 4-year-old daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner Sergio Castillo.
Windy Acers Stables bred the bay filly in Oklahoma form the FDD Dynasty mare Kirklyns Dynasty. Edgar Martinez had the riding call aboard the $52,782 stakes winner.
A Valiant Diamond finished a half length in front of Sizzlin Chick Corona to pickup $8,000 for second. Sizzlin Chick Corona earned $4,000.
Downs Casino Quarter Horse Stakes
Multiple stakes winner Kowboy Jim defeated Mitey Political by three-quarters in the $40,000 Downs Casino Quarter Horse Stakes on Saturday night.
Kowboy Jim has compiled a (39) 9-9-9 record and the $19,200 winner's purse in the Downs Casino boosted his bankroll to $251,450.
Ridden by Cody Smith, the 7-year-old gelding completed the 440 yards in :21.317 seconds, a 97 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.
Mitey Political earned $8,200 for second. Walcott earned $4,000 for third.
$35,000 Sandia Stakes
In the $35,000 Sandia Stakes, Cleared Furr Takeoff defeated Mahoney N Tackleberry by half-a-length.
Trainer Bernard Baca trains the Oklahoma-bred son of Furrtreeous for owner-breeder Richard Joneson. Cleared Furr Takeoff is out of No Snoozin Floozie by Takin On Cash.
The 3-year-old has compiled a (10) 2-2-1 record and used the $17,500 winner's purse to double his earnings to $35,279.
Mahoney N Tacklebery earned $7,525 for second and Holy Storm was 1-½ lengths back to pick up $3,850 for third.
$35,000 Albuquerque Juvenile Stakes
Freighttrain King, a 2-year-old son of world champion sire Freighttrain B, defeated Chequer Out by half-a-length in the $35,000 Albuquerque Juvenile Stakes Saturday night at The Downs.
Trainer Shawna Manriquez saddled the 2-year-old Colorado home bred for owner-breeder Martin Lopez. Freighttrain King is out of the Dean Miracle mare Sheza Miracle Chico.
Also a finalist in the John Deere Ruidoso Downs Juvenile and the Oklahoma Juvenile at Remington Park this season, Freighttrain King has earned $32,864 in eight starts.
Chequer Out earned $7,000 for second and Tresponte finished half-a-length back to pick up $3,500 for third.
