Breeders Derby, Schvaneveldt Head Night With $39,350 Pick 6 Carryover

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 1, 2021—The 10-race program on Saturday night at Los Alamitos will feature a Pick 6 carryover of $39,350 plus a pair of a stakes races led by the $122,000 PCQHRA Breeders Derby.

The Pick 6 sequence will begin in race five and consists of an all-Quarter Horse racing lineup. With the new money wagered on Sunday, the total pool in the Pick 6 could be over $125,000. Both stakes events are part of this wager with the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap set as the sixth race of the night and the Breeders Derby slated as the 10th and final.

Ed Allred’s Monopolist, who topped the night of trials by easily posting the fastest time, has not been entered in the final. Instead, his connections have opted to wait for the trials to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby to be held on October 16. Past derby stars like Runforyourlife and Forget It have also taken a similar route to prepare for the Super Derby.

With Monopolist out of the Breeders Derby, the 400-yard race is a tossup between this evenly matched group. Steve Burns’ Go To Girl won her trial to this race by 3/4 lengths and now enters the final with a three-race win streak. Trained by Mike Casselman, Go To Girl is a full-sister to Grade 1 winners Cyber Monday, Powerful Favorite, and Runforyourlife. Oscar Peinado will ride the homebred filly.

Kim and Les Sweeting’s BF Outfoosed finished strongly for second after starting fifth against Go To Girl in their trial encounter. The Foose gelding is making the sixth stakes appearance of his career. College Scandal, who was third in the Grade 2 Golden State Derby and ran second to Monopolist in the trials, is another top contender in this race.

Gabriel Carballo’s Staubauch will go after his second stakes win at Los Alamitos when he takes on five rivals in the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap on Saturday night.

To be ridden by Jose Nicasio for trainer Cesar De Alba, Staubauch won the John Ward Handicap here last year. The son Texas Icon was fourth in the Schvaneveldt last year but figures to be tough in the 15th running of this race. De Alba, who owns the stakes record with three wins as jockey, will look to score his first Schvaneveldt win as a trainer.

Trainer Matt Fales will be going for a sweep in this race, as he’ll saddle the other horses in this race. His main runners include Apollitical J One, who comes in after back-to-back allowance wins, stakes veteran Chicks Fayvorite and 110-yard speedster Separate Delight.
